So what actually are Magnesium Chloride Flakes, and where do Blants’ come from?
Great question to start with! Magnesium Chloride Flakes are exactly what they sound like; flakes of magnesium chloride, a naturally occurring mineral salt. Ours (Blants) are harvested from a pristine lake high up on the remote Tibetan Plateau at 3,200 metres above sea level, to be exact. That unusually high altitude, combined with the lake’s complete isolation from industrial activity, is what gives our flakes their exceptional purity.
No chemicals, no fillers, no funny business. The salt is simply dried using natural solar energy, which concentrates it to maximum magnesium levels, and then it’s bagged and shipped. It really is that straightforward!
Why would I use Magnesium Flakes rather than just taking a magnesium supplement tablet?
This is something we get asked about a lot, and honestly, there’s a really beautiful reason for it! When you absorb magnesium through your skin, what’s known as transdermal absorption, it goes directly into the cells that need it most. Some people find that oral magnesium supplements can be hard on their digestive system or simply don’t absorb as efficiently.
Soaking in a warm magnesium-rich bath allows your whole body to soak up what it needs, while also being genuinely relaxing at the same time. Two birds, one stone…or should we say, one bath!
How do I use them? Is there a right or wrong way?
The good news is there’s no complicated routine here! Here’s what we suggest:
For a full bath soak, add 2 to 3 cups of Magnesium Chloride Flakes to a warm bath and soak for at least 20 minutes. For an even more nourishing experience, you can blend them with our Sodium Bicarbonate or any of our other natural bath salts.
A little Blants insider tip: avoid pre-mixing salts in a container, as many can harden over time. Instead, combine them directly in the bath just before use for the best results.
For a foot soak, add about half a cup of flakes to a foot spa or tub of warm water and let those tired feet soak for as long as you like. If you’ve been on your feet all day, this is honestly one of life’s simple pleasures.
For skincare or body scrubs, Magnesium Flakes work beautifully when combined with essential oils for salt scrubs and other skin care applications.
“I’ve heard magnesium helps with sleep and muscle cramps. Is that actually true?”
It is! Magnesium is involved in supporting and regulating over 300 reactions in the body and plays a role in nearly every tissue we have, including our muscles and our nervous system.
When your body has adequate magnesium, muscles are better able to relax, which is why so many people find a magnesium bath before bed genuinely helps them switch off and sleep more deeply. Muscle cramps, twitches, and that restless-leg feeling that keeps you up at night? Often a sign that your body is asking for more magnesium.
It’s estimated that up to 80% of Australians are low in magnesium. That stat always surprises people, but when you consider how much our modern diets rely on processed foods (which strip out minerals), and how depleted agricultural soils have become, it starts to make a lot of sense.
Are Blants Magnesium Flakes safe to use, and what’s the quality like?
